Last Update: Thursday, June 28, 2007 It's always been my dream to run into some wanted guy down at the Piggly Wiggly, make a phone call, and collect a million bucks. Sort of like hunting human lottery balls. Originally this article was going to present the complete “find-this-guy-and-you-can-retire” list of wanted men -- complete with bios, histories and last known locations for all of them. But I decided to narrow my scope (and reduce my work) to just one guy for starters. Boston hood Whitey Bulger seemed like the best candidate. Why? Mainly because he's now 77 and if he's not caught soon he's going to die drooling in some old folks home. Then nobody wins. James "Whitey" Bulger is the Boston-Irish mobster whose real life provided the backdrop for Scorsese’s movie "The Departed." He is wanted for Murder (19 Counts), Extortion, Racketeering, Money Laundering and so on. The FBI is offering $1,000,000.00 for info leading to his capture. (For more info on Bulger’s life of crime, see the links at the end of this article.) Now before you load up the Glock, here's an important warning: James "Whitey" Bulger is a ruthless killer and should be considered armed and very dangerous. If you run into him, don’t try to apprehend him Rambo style or, worse, try to out think him by asking sly questions. He's intelligent and cunning. His antenna will most likely pick up on your interest and you might miss your next sunrise. Contact the FBI or the nearest U.S. Embassy with any info. PERSONAL TRAITS: Bulger is 77 years old, 5’ 8” (1.73 m), medium build with blue eyes. Bulger is a neat, fastidious man in appearance and habits. He believes in keeping in shape and normally works out in the morning. He may also get exercise by taking long walks with his girlfriend. He feels that people who use alcohol or drugs to excess are weak. He watches very little television besides The History Channel. He likes to read. He is known to frequent libraries and historic sites. He’s a military history buff and, like the generals he admires, he meticulously plans out his moves ahead - including contingency plans for different outcomes. He has a violent temper but may now have adopted a more soft spoken manner. He is known to often carry a knife (sometimes near his ankle). He is on the run with his girlfriend, Catherine Greig, 55 -- a former dental hygienist. She likes to go to hairdressers. One of the tricks the pair has used is befriending a poor family by buying needed appliances and eye glasses for the kids (with $100 bills). They integrate themselves with this poorer family as a part their cover. They did this in Louisiana, making their introduction by complementing the family dog. They’re both animal lovers. Bulger has been known to take the beta-blocker Atenolol (50 mg) for a minor heart condition and may take Xanax for depression. He also may be lactose intolerant. Among the aliases he’s used are: Thomas F. Baxter, Mark Shapeton, Tom Harris, and Tom Marshall. He has traveled throughout Europe, the United States, Canada, and Mexico. He has at times kept money in safe deposit boxes. He has also sold South African Gold Krugerrands at a pawnshop to raise cash. He may have an Irish passport. VIDEOS AND PICTURES: Take a look at this video. It’s about 25 years old, but notice how he stands, how he walks, how he holds himself projecting authority and command. His hands are often on his hips or arms folded, with a note of tension in the upper body. Notice his somewhat rigid and deliberate movements. Here’s the video (2:50 -- there’s no sound): Does he still have these habits? How has age changed them, if at all? Here's some 13 year old pictures of Bulger . . . And some 13 year old pictures of his girlfriend, Catherine Greig . . . ![]() Everyone gets older. Here's Bulger, age enhanced . . . ![]() And as a reminder of what we're dealing with, here's a picture of just one of Bulger's 19 murder victims, Debra Davis. Bulger strangled her to death . . . LAST KNOWN LOCATION: The last officially confirmed sighting was in London in 2002 but a law enforcement officer swears he saw him at the opening of "The Departed" in October of 2006 in San Diego, California. There have been other possible sightings in Clearwater, Palm Beach, New Orleans and Ireland. But an art-theft investigator from the UK thought he saw him in Spain recently. HUNTING BULGER WITH A MILLION EYES: How many people have actually seen Bulger this week? Maybe 10. Maybe 100. Based on the duration and freshness of their exposure to him, each one has a different Target Identification Ability (TIA). For example, if Bulger happened to be your neighbor and you had coffee with him every morning for the last 6 months your TIA would be very high. You can identify him. Conversely, if you saw him walking down the street one time 6 months ago your TIA would be low. You'd have already forgotten him. There may be 100 or 1000 people who have a high TIA for Bulger right now (his doctor, landlord, neighbors, etc). They just don’t know anyone is looking for him. Obviously if any of these people saw his picture he would be caught. This brings us to the important question. How do you get people with a high Bulger TIA to look at his picture if you don’t know who they are? Well that’s up to you, because the only way I can think of is if you send an email to you friends and ask them if they’ve seen this guy. The question is what percentage of the people reading this will email their friends with either 1. A picture of Bulger, or 2. A link to this article. If the number is high, then the odds of contacting someone proximate to Bulger increases. Is it really worth an email? Is it interesting enough? Is it worth it, even just as an internet experiment? Well, he is a stone-cold killer and there is a $1,000,000 reward for his capture. But within the whirlwind of your daily life, is it worth it? It's up to you, but I think so. Why? Well, because it's for a good cause and hunting humans is pretty fun -- and a noble hobby. So get to work and drop an email to your friends around the world. Who knows. You might make one of them rich, and be the one who caught Whitey Bulger. Hopefully someone does before time lets him off the hook completely.
